- Prevailing torque lock nuts are fasteners that use a locking mechanism to prevent the nut from loosening due to vibration or other forces. The main benefit of using prevailing torque lock nuts is that they help ensure a secure connection between two components. Additionally, prevailing torque lock nuts can be used in applications where parts need to remain secure even if exposed to very high vibration or shock loadings.
- There are two primary types of prevailing torque lock nuts - all metal and nylon inserts. All metal prevailing torque lock nuts use a mechanical interference method such as thread deformation or serrations on the threads to provide resistance against loosening. Conversely, nylon insert prevailing torque lock nuts feature an internal nylon insert that creates friction between the threads and helps prevent them from backing off.
